  • If These Walls Could Talk: The Landry Home

Every house in Oaklawn holds more than square footage and floor plans. Behind each front door are decades of memories — birthday cakes, scraped knees, quiet prayers, and the everyday moments that quietly shape a family.

The home on Jeanne where the Landry family lived is one of those houses.

The house itself was built the year before Roxeen Landry was born. It was constructed by Wilson “Scotty” Landry, a contractor and Roxeen’s brother-in-law, who also built the Boudreaux home just across the street. Like many homes in our neighborhood, it wasn’t just a structure — it was part of a network of families who built lives side by side.

Before becoming a mother, Mrs. Landry worked as a secretary in the same building where her husband worked. That’s where the two first met — a simple workplace connection that grew into a lifelong marriage.

Once their children arrived, she devoted herself fully to family life as a stay-at-home mother. But her care extended far beyond her own household. She became the family babysitter for nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and cousins — the kind of steady presence that so many families relied on.

Her grandchildren remember something special about visiting her: she spoke to them only in French. It was her way of passing down culture, language, and heritage — a gift that connected generations to their roots.

Life for the Landry children and grandchildren was often centered around the neighborhood park, where they spent countless hours playing and growing up alongside other Oaklawn kids.

Faith and service were also central to Mrs. Landry’s life. She hosted two weekly rosary groups in her home — one in English and one in French — opening her doors to neighbors who gathered to pray together. She also volunteered at Lafayette General Hospital and, alongside her sister, crocheted tiny caps for newborn babies in the NICU.

Mr. Landry had his own story as well. In his younger years, he was a boxer for UL, bringing the same strength and determination into his life as a husband, father, and neighbor.

Together, they built a life that stretched across generations.

Mrs. Landry lived to be 98 years old, and Mr. Landry to 87 — a testament to a generation that lived long, full lives rooted in family, faith, and community. And they were not the only ones in Oaklawn to do so. Many homes in this neighborhood hold similar stories of couples who raised families, served others, and grew old together right here on these streets.

The Landrys are survived by their three daughters and the generations that followed.

And though time moves on and families change, the homes remain — quietly holding the echoes of the lives lived inside them.

Sometimes when we walk down these streets, it’s worth remembering:

If these walls could talk, they would tell the story of a neighborhood that raised families, built friendships, and lived life well.
